Livestock

A register of every animal or batch of birds, with health records, withdrawal periods, breeding and births, milk and eggs, and sales invoiced to the buyer.

Getting started

Livestock is an add-on module. Your account owner adds it from Settings, then Modules.

  1. Open Livestock, then Livestock settings. Set a Tag prefix and the VAT on animal sales. Only an admin sees this page.
  2. Open Herds and flocks and add where your animals are kept: a herd, a flock, a pen or poultry house, a kraal or a paddock.
  3. Open Animals and press New animal for each animal. For poultry kept by the batch, enter one row with the number of head. You can also import your herd from a spreadsheet.
  4. Record treatments under Health, services under Breeding, and daily collections under Milk and eggs.

To add animals and records, your role needs to be able to enter documents. The Dashboard shows head on the farm, births and sales this year, milk this month, health due and any animal in a withdrawal period.

How to

Add a herd or flock

  1. Open Livestock, then Herds and flocks, and open Add a herd or flock.
  2. Enter a Name (for example Dairy herd or Layers house 1).
  3. Choose the Kind: Herd, Flock, Pen or house, Kraal (boma), Paddock or Other.
  4. Choose the Species, or leave it on Mixed, and say Where it is.
  5. Press Add.

To rename a group or archive it, press Edit on its row.

Add an animal

  1. Open Livestock, then Animals, and press New animal.
  2. Type the Farm tag, or leave it empty and Mifumo numbers it. Add the National ear tag (NLITS) and a Name if it has them.
  3. Choose the Species and Sex, and type the Breed. Common Tanzanian breeds are suggested as you type.
  4. For a batch of birds, enter the Number of head.
  5. Choose the Herd or flock, the Date of birth (tick The date of birth is a guess if needed) and Colour and markings.
  6. In Where it came from, choose Born on the farm, Bought, Gift or inherited, or Already on the farm. For a bought animal, add What it cost and Bought from.
  7. Choose the Mother and Father if they are on the farm, or type the bull's name or AI straw code in Father, if not on the farm.
  8. Enter Weight today (kg) if you weighed it, then press Save animal, or Save and add another.

Animals born on the farm are added for you when you record the birth under Breeding.

Weigh an animal

  1. Open the animal from Animals.
  2. Under Weights, enter the Date and kg.
  3. Press Add weight.

The animal shows its latest weight and how many grams a day it has gained since the last weighing. Batches counted by the head are not weighed.

Record a treatment or vaccination

  1. Open Livestock, then Health, and open Record a treatment. You can also press Record a treatment on the dashboard or on an animal.
  2. Choose the Animal, or leave it on A whole herd or flock and choose the Herd or flock.
  3. Choose What was done: Vaccination, Treatment, Deworming, Dipping or spraying, Vet visit, Test or check, or Other.
  4. Fill in the Date, Against or for (for example East Coast Fever), Product, Dose, Given by and Cost.
  5. Enter the Withdrawal (days) from the medicine label.
  6. Set Next due if it must be repeated, and press Record.

A withdrawal period stops the animal being sold for food until it ends. A next due date puts a reminder on the dashboard and under Due in the next 30 days on the Health page. Press Record next to a reminder to fill in the next treatment, or Not needed to clear it.

Record a service or AI

  1. Open Livestock, then Breeding, and open Record a service or AI. Or press Record a service on a female animal.
  2. Choose the Female and How: Natural service or Artificial insemination (AI).
  3. Choose the Male on the farm, or type the bull or straw in Or the bull or straw.
  4. Enter the Date served and press Record.

The expected birth date comes from the species: cattle 283 days, goats 150, sheep 147, pigs 114. After a pregnancy check, press Pregnant or Not pregnant on the row.

Record a birth

  1. Open Breeding and press Result on the row, or press Record under Births expected in the next 30 days on the dashboard.
  2. In What happened, choose Born, Lost (abortion or stillbirth) or Did not take, and set the Date.
  3. For a birth, enter how many were Born dead, and under Born alive fill in one row per young: Tag (empty to number it for you), Sex, Name and Birth weight (kg).
  4. Press Save.

Each young born alive is added to the register with its mother, father, birth date and the mother's herd.

Record milk or eggs

  1. Open Livestock, then Milk and eggs, and choose the Milk or Eggs tab.
  2. For milk, choose the Cow or goat, or leave it on A whole herd and choose the Herd. For eggs, choose the Flock.
  3. Enter the Date and the Litres or Eggs.
  4. Enter what was Thrown away: spoilt, broken or in a withdrawal period.
  5. Press Record.

The page shows each day for the last 30 days and, for milk, the Best milkers, last 30 days. To correct a record, press Remove and record it again.

Sell an animal or record a loss

  1. Open the animal and press Sell or record loss.
  2. In What happened, choose Sold, Died, Slaughtered or Missing or stolen, and the Date.
  3. For a batch, enter How many of the head are leaving.
  4. For a sale, choose the Buyer, enter the Total price and the Movement permit number, and leave Make the invoice ticked.
  5. Add the Reason or notes and press Record.

A sale is invoiced to the buyer as livestock sales, so receipts and statements work as for any other invoice. If the animal is in a withdrawal period you are warned, and you must tick Sell anyway (not for food) to go ahead.

Questions

Do the costs I type on an animal or a treatment go into the books?

No. They are kept for the farm's own figures. Enter buying animals, feed and vet bills as ordinary bills in Purchases, as usual.

What is a withdrawal period?

The number of days after a medicine when milk or meat from the animal should not be sold for food. Mifumo shows these animals on the dashboard under Withdrawal: don't sell milk or meat and warns you if you try to sell one.

How do I keep chickens without tagging each bird?

Add one animal for the batch, with species Chicken and the Number of head. Treat or record eggs for the whole flock in one record.

Can I see animals that have left the farm?

Yes. On Animals, set Status to Left the farm (all) or to Sold, Died, Slaughtered or Missing or stolen, and press Show.
